Essex Golf Club Captains

HISTORY

The Society was founded on the 17th September 1953 by a group of Past Captains of major Essex Golf Clubs. On Friday 25th February 1955 the first Annual General Meeting was held at the Abercorn Rooms, Liverpool Street, with an attendance of 39 members. Subscriptions were fixed at ten shillings per annum and a Committee of two was elected. Mr. H.K.C. Ward was elected as Captain for the ensuing year and Mr. T.L. Troughton was elected as Secretary. It was further decided to order a gross of Society ties at 18s 11p each. Affiliation to the English Golf Union was applied for.

The 1958 programme consisted of three meetings at Colchester, The Warren and Ilford Golf Clubs.

Our present programme numbers around 28 events, including 13 members events, 10 matches against other counties, a 3 day Mini Break (mixed), a Mini Tour .

Special events include the Greenkeepers Day which dates back to 1957 and the Family Greensomes originally known as the Father & Son Trophy which was inaugurated by Mr. Charles Diebel (Romford) in 1961.

In addition as part of the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations, we joined with 7 other counties to run an annual Queen's Jubilee Trophy.
